Understanding Labels on Ordinals

Exploring Ordinals metadata.

Updated over a month ago

In this article, we'll consder the labels attached to Ordinals on Bitcoin. Understanding these labels will help you better navigate and appreciate the unique aspects of each digital collectible.

On-Chain

The label "On-Chain" signifies that the metadata associated with the ordinal is entirely stored on the blockchain and is immutable. The blockchain acts as a distributed ledger, ensuring transparency and security by preventing any modifications to the information once it has been recorded. As a result, the authenticity and provenance of the digital collectible can be verified, as its data cannot be altered or tampered with.

Offchain Image Shown

When you encounter the "Offchain Image Shown" label on a digital artifact, it means that Magic Eden is displaying a high-resolution image provided by the creator. However, it's important to note that this image might have a lower resolution when stored on the blockchain due to limitations in storage capacity. The original high-resolution image is accessible off-chain.

Recursive

The "Recursive" label refers to inscriptions that are generated by combining one or more "submodule" inscriptions. This process creates complex and layered ordinals with unique designs. The best part is that Recursive inscriptions can also be stored on-chain, ensuring that the details and composition remain intact and unchangeable, just like other On-Chain artifacts.
